Don't forget to bring and enter your Mexican-style beers to the meeting tomorrrow night for the competition. Since this is an "open" competition - meaning everyone at the meeting will judge the beers - please bring enough so that everyone can get a taste. I suggest a 6 pack or growler as the minimum amount. There are no forms to fill out, just label the beer with your name, the beer name, and what about it makes it "Mexican-style".

What makes a beer "Mexican-style"? Don't just think about crappy Corona. Amber lagers, Chili beers, and this past winter Del Dorte even came out with a Mexican Christmas Bock.

Ribbons will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

There is also a prize for the best beer name, so be creative.

As usual, I will be attending the Big Beers Festival in Vail January 7-9. I usually rent a house that will sleep 12-16 people. It works out nice because we have our own kitchen, private hot tub, and lots of room to spread out and have some fun. Because of popular demand, we found a house that sleeps closer to 20. Right now, we have room for a couple more people. The cost will be roughly $235-250 per person for three nights of lodging. Let me know if you would be interested in joining us for the weekend.
Cheers,

It is time of the final event for the FOTR Homebrewer of the Year competition. The theme is Holiday beers which are generally bigger, stronger, more hoppy, and/or spiced beers so the styles are really wide open here. This event should also be the most fun as it is being hosted by Phil Pennegroth at his Redpenny Brewery on Sunday, Dec 20th at 1pm. In Phil's words, "The judging will be followed by a thrashing of the Raiders by the Broncos at 215P. I will be cooking a meat (beef or chicken) on the grill so bring a side dish to share".

If you have never been to the Redpenney Brewery you are in for a treat.

For the competition I still need entries and judges, so please reply back to me or this blog if you are doing either. For the entries, we will treat each one as if it was entered into the Specialty category so please include base style and special ingredients in the entry label info. They will be accepted all the way up to the competition day.

Here is Phil's info:

Hello Foamers,
Denver Zoo is seeking people who are willing to do a brewing presentation for the Brew at the Zoo event this Sept 11. The presentation would involve brewing a batch of beer on grounds, chatting people up about the joys of homebrewing, and going over a presentation table of ingredients and equipment. Whoever presents would have to bring their own gear set-up and ingredients, but you would get to keep the beer and get a free participant wristband (you would be able to eat and drink as long as the booth is attended).

Hello,

My name is Marco Olivo, and I'm a homebrewer from Berthoud. I also work at the Larimer County Fairgrounds which is where the Gnarley Barley Brewfest is being held on August 1st. I wanted to make sure that everyone knows that the HOMEBREW COMPETITION WILL BE HELD THE SATURDAY PRIOR TO THE GNARLEY BARLEY BREWFEST. That is to say that the homebrew competition is on July 25th not August 1st. We are doing this so that the judges & stewards of the homebrew competition may also attend the brewfest. All the judges & stewards will receive complimentary passes to the Gnarley Barley as a way of thanking them for their help.

There are 21 commercial breweries participating in the Gnarley Barley. The winner of this commercial competition will have a tap handle at The Budweiser Events Center for a year.

This is an AHA/BJCP sanctioned event. Pamela McAlpin is the competition coordinator and she can be reached at just.pamela@gmail.com

Entries can be submitted to your local homebrew shop between July 13th and 17th. We'll be picking up the entries on July 18th.

Pamela will be making a formal announcement via Tech Talk in the very near future.

Thanks for your support & Happy Brewing !

Cheers,
Marco
